Course Description

Join trained milliner Mary Jane Baxter for this 5-week hat making course which will see you create at least one cut and sew soft hat and one party piece. You’ll also experiment with methods for creating a number of trims from a range of upcycled materials. You’ll learn to draft your own pattern so that your hat is guaranteed to fit. The course will include a range of different techniques including machine sewing, hand stitching and cutting and sticking. Machines and basic sewing equipment will be provided. but those on the course will need to source their own materials (no specialist materials will be needed). Basic sewing skills are required for this course. Mary Jane Baxter completed an HNC in millinery at the Kensington & Chelsea College and went on to work with milliner to the stars Stephen Jones. She sold her first hat collection to Harvey Nichols and writes regularly for The Hat Magazine. Mary Jane is the author of three books including The Modern Girl’s Guide to Hatmaking, which will provide inspiration for this course. (The book is no longer in print, but you can easily find copies of this book second hand on line). Please note we now require a £10.00 deposit which is refunded on completion of the course and on request. If this is a problem, please contact: learning@gcda.org.uk. Please bring your proof of ID & NI number to the first session of the course, as an enrolment form needs to be completed. Once you have registered you have agreed to our terms & conditions.
