GCDA - Proud to be part of Pride

Pride has been celebrated every June since 1970 - a year after the Stonewall Riots took place in the US

June is the month when people around the world come together in love and friendship to show their support for LGBTQIA+ rights, and here at GCDA we're fully on board with everything that Pride stands for.

Throughout our community centres and hubs this month you'll see us flying the flag for Pride. It's important for us at GCDA to share our values with everyone we meet. Let's be proud this June and every month of the year in supporting the LGBTQIA+ community.

GCDA says:

  • We recognise the prejudice and disadvantage that people within the LGBTQIA+ community face.

  • We want to make a public declaration that says GCDA is a visible, safe space for people to be themselves without fear or judgment.

  • We want LGBTQIA+ individuals to be proud of their identity.

  • We want our spaces and events to create a sense of joy, unity and support, reminding individuals that they are not alone and are part of a larger, supportive community.

We asked some members of the GCDA team why Pride is important to them.

Ross Aggett, Buildings' Manager Kidbrooke Hub

"Pride matters because everyone deserves to be seen, accepted, and safe being themselves. Pride celebrates progress while reminding us there’s still work to do. Most of all, it brings people together to show no one has to

feel alone."

"Pride is about acceptance, inclusion and recognising that everyone has the right to be themselves without fear or judgment."

"As an ally I think it’s important that we all stand up for those who are not at the table. Differences should be celebrated, not discriminated against, silence is not an option. I have taken part in many Pride events, and they have all been joyous, a bringing together of communities in a celebration of authenticity and love. I believe that we should all love who we

are and be who we want to be."

"In today’s political climate it’s important to stand together and create a voice that promotes peace, safety and companionship. As a gay man, Pride is important. It’s not about being different, but about showing the community that everyone belongs, that we are all human and unique."

"Pride is unapologetic. It's the decision that I make every day to be entirely myself, no matter how terrifying the thought of being unadulterated, unfiltered, and not always palatable is. Pride - to be proud of who you are, and where you have come from is needed now more so than ever."

The Pride march in London will take place this year on Saturday 4th July.

🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈You'll also be able to celebrate Pride locally at our Kidbrooke Community Hub on Saturday 11th July at Carnival with Pride from 11am - 5pm. Watch the next GCDA Learning newsletter for further details 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈
